Omanye

Literally translated to mean “a good omen.”  Serving as a good omen, the SHREWD FOUNDATION takes the opportunity provided by this outreach to accomplish several purposes. A number of activities marks this outreach which promotes the need for education, good health and also ensures the provision of some basic needs of street children. The health team of the foundation for example takes some street children through the appropriate methods of keeping the buccal cavity clean and fresh. This is necessary due to the reports of various unhealthy situation bedeviling street children. The foundation during this outreach does its best to empower the care givers of street children some assistance and the need for formal education.

The foundation takes a step further to organize free health screening for street children together with adults whom the streets have become a home.  Since most street children hardly get access to some public facilities, of which the health care facilities are not included, SHREWD FOUNDATION provides a platform for these children to have access to health care. In a bid to ensure accessibility to primary health care reaches most street children, the foundation is working towards registering most street children onto the National Health Insurance Scheme.

During Omanye, the foundation keeps its cordial relations with the neglected street children who lack affection and kindness from the public by mingling and having fun with them. The occasion serves as a day to remember in the lives of  the street children as it brings joy and smiles, to their faces and heart. We believe Omanye adds to the joy which has been stifled in street children. The event is also marked with donation of clothes as part of meeting one of  life’s basic necessities, hence the need for all street children to have more than a cloth. Several clothes and shoes are shared for street children.

In order to ensure the our goal of catering for street children is attained, the foundation engages in several activities to improve the health and well-being of the street children.  The neglect and harsh treatment meted out to street children contributes to the deprivation of basic needs every child would want to have and enjoy. The intervention of SHREWD FOUNDATION through Omanye provides an avenue where most of the basic needs can be met.

Sustainable Impact:  The initiative to enroll most street children on the National Health Insurance would make health care accessible to street children who shun medical health care when sick. By so doing, good health and well-being (SDG3) is gradually been attained. No matter how neglected street children might feel on the streets, there must come a time where they will feel loved and cared for as this is essence of humanity.
